1 Samuel in the Daily Office Lectionary

The Daily Office Lectionary appoints 1 Samuel 44 times in its two-year course and 6 times on Holy Days. The course reads 27 of its 31 chapters, 16 of them in full.

Chapter by chapter

  • Year One reads chapters 1–25, 28, 31 during the Season after Pentecost, at Morning Prayer.
  • Year Two reads chapters 1–2, 16 during Advent, Christmas, and Easter, at Morning Prayer.

When both offices have two lessons, “the Old Testament Reading for the alternate year is used as the First Reading at Evening Prayer” (BCP p. 934). This site and the app follow that rubric, so most of these lessons are heard twice: at Morning Prayer in the year listed, and at Evening Prayer on the same day in the other year.
