Ecclesiastes in the Daily Office Lectionary

The Daily Office Lectionary appoints Ecclesiastes 13 times in its two-year course. The course reads 11 of its 12 chapters, 7 of them in full.

Chapter by chapter

  • Year One does not read it in the course.
  • Year Two reads chapters 1–9, 11–12 during the Season after Pentecost, at Morning Prayer.
Ecclesiastes chapters: Year Two only 1–9, 11–12; not in the two-year course 10; in part 1, 4, 7–8.
  • Year One only
  • Year Two only
  • Both years
  • Half filled: only part of the chapter
  • Not in the two-year course

When both offices have two lessons, “the Old Testament Reading for the alternate year is used as the First Reading at Evening Prayer” (BCP p. 934). This site and the app follow that rubric, so most of these lessons are heard twice: at Morning Prayer in the year listed, and at Evening Prayer on the same day in the other year.
