Genesis in the Daily Office Lectionary

The Daily Office Lectionary appoints Genesis 72 times in its two-year course and 3 times on Holy Days. The course reads 44 of its 50 chapters, 25 of them in full.

Chapter by chapter

  • Year One reads chapters 12, 17, 22, 28 during Christmas and Holy Week, at Morning Prayer.
  • Year Two reads chapters 1–4, 6–9, 11–19, 21–33, 35, 37, 39–50 during Advent, Epiphany, and Lent, at Morning Prayer.
Genesis chapters: both years 12, 17, 22, 28; Year Two only 1–4, 6–9, 11, 13–16, 18–19, 21, 23–27, 29–33, 35, 37, 39–50; not in the two-year course 5, 10, 20, 34, 36, 38; in part 2, 7–8, 11, 14–15, 19, 21–22, 24–26, 28, 30–33, 35, 46.
  • Year One only
  • Year Two only
  • Both years
  • Half filled: only part of the chapter
  • Not in the two-year course

When both offices have two lessons, “the Old Testament Reading for the alternate year is used as the First Reading at Evening Prayer” (BCP p. 934). This site and the app follow that rubric, so most of these lessons are heard twice: at Morning Prayer in the year listed, and at Evening Prayer on the same day in the other year.
