OFFICIANT

I will bless the Lord, who giveth me counsel; my heart teacheth me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.

Psalm 16:7,8

Confession of Sin

OFFICIANT

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

OFFICIANT

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Silence may be kept.

Officiant and People together, all kneeling

ALL

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

ALL

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Remain kneeling for the concluding prayer.

OFFICIANT

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

OFFICIANT

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Gracious Light

O gracious light,

pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,

O Son of God, O Giver of Life,

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalms 91, 92

Psalm 91Qui habitat

1

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, *

abides under the shadow of the Almighty.

2

He shall say to the LORD,

"You are my refuge and my stronghold, *

my God in whom I put my trust."

3

He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter *

and from the deadly pestilence.

4

He shall cover you with his pinions,

and you shall find refuge under his wings; *

his faithfulness shall be a shield and buckler.

5

You shall not be afraid of any terror by night, *

nor of the arrow that flies by day;

6

Of the plague that stalks in the darkness, *

nor of the sickness that lays waste at mid-day.

7

A thousand shall fall at your side

and ten thousand at your right hand, *

but it shall not come near you.

8

Your eyes have only to behold *

to see the reward of the wicked.

9

Because you have made the LORD your refuge, *

and the Most High your habitation,

10

There shall no evil happen to you, *

neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.

11

For he shall give his angels charge over you, *

to keep you in all your ways.

12

They shall bear you in their hands, *

lest you dash your foot against a stone.

13

You shall tread upon the lion and adder; *

you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet.

14

Because he is bound to me in love,

therefore will I deliver him; *

I will protect him, because he knows my Name.

15

He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; *

I am with him in trouble;

I will rescue him and bring him to honor.

16

With long life will I satisfy him, *

and show him my salvation.

Psalm 92Bonum est confiteri

1

It is a good thing to give thanks to the LORD, *

and to sing praises to your Name, O Most High;

2

To tell of your loving-kindness early in the morning *

and of your faithfulness in the night season;

3

On the psaltery, and on the lyre, *

and to the melody of the harp.

4

For you have made me glad by your acts, O LORD; *

and I shout for joy because of the works of your hands.

5

LORD, how great are your works! *

your thoughts are very deep.

6

The dullard does not know,

nor does the fool understand, *

that though the wicked grow like weeds,

and all the workers of iniquity flourish,

7

They flourish only to be destroyed for ever; *

but you, O LORD, are exalted for evermore.

8

For lo, your enemies, O LORD,

lo, your enemies shall perish, *

and all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

9

But my horn you have exalted like the horns of wild bulls; *

I am anointed with fresh oil.

10

My eyes also gloat over my enemies, *

and my ears rejoice to hear the doom of the wicked who rise up against me.

11

The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, *

and shall spread abroad like a cedar of Lebanon.

12

Those who are planted in the house of the LORD *

shall flourish in the courts of our God;

13

They shall still bear fruit in old age; *

they shall be green and succulent;

14

That they may show how upright the LORD is, *

my Rock, in whom there is no fault.

ALL

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

The First Lesson

41And king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom, that all should be one people, 42and that each should forsake his own laws. And all the nations agreed according to the word of the king; 43and many of Israel consented to his worship, and sacrificed to the idols, and profaned the Sabbath. 44And the king sent letters by the hand of messengers to Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, that they should follow laws strange to the land, 45and should forbid whole burnt offerings and sacrifice and drink offerings in the sanctuary; and should profane the Sabbaths and feasts, 46and pollute the sanctuary and those who were holy; 47that they should build altars, and temples, and shrines for idols, and should sacrifice swine’s flesh and unclean beasts: 48and that they should leave their sons uncircumcised, that they should make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation; 49so that they might forget the law, and change all the ordinances. 50And whoever shall not do according to the word of the king, he shall die. 51According to all these words wrote he to his whole kingdom; and he appointed overseers over all the people, and he commanded the cities of Judah to sacrifice, city by city. 52And from the people were gathered together to them many, every one that had forsaken the law; and they did evil things in the land; 53and they made israel to hide themselves in every place of refuge which they had.

54And on the fifteenth day of Chislev, in

the hundred and forty and fifth year, they built an abomination of desolation upon the

altar, and in the cities of Judah on every side they built

idol

altars.

55And at the doors of the houses and in the streets they burned incense. 56And they tore in pieces the books of the law which they found, and set them on fire. 57And wherever was found with any a book of the covenant, and if any consented to the law, the king’s sentence delivered him to death. 58Thus did they in their might to Israel, to those that were found month by month in the cities.

59And on the five and twentieth day of the month they sacrificed upon the

idol

altar

of God.

60And

the women that had circumcised their children they put to death according to the commandment.

61And they hanged their babes about their necks, and

destroyed

their houses, and those who had circumcised them.

62And many in Israel were fully resolved and confirmed in themselves not to eat unclean things.

63And

they chose to die, that they might not be defiled with the meats, and that they might not profane the holy covenant: and they died.

Silence may be kept after each Reading.

A Song of Praise

The Song of Mary

Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *

you are worthy of praise; glory to you.

Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *

we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *

on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.

Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *

we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *

in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *

we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

My soul doth magnify the Lord, *

and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

For he hath regarded *

the lowliness of his handmaiden.

For behold from henceforth *

all generations shall call me blessed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me, *

and holy is his Name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him *

throughout all generations.

He hath showed strength with his arm; *

he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat, *

and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things, *

and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, *

as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Second Lesson

16Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow. 18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation.

19My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, 20for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires. 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and every expression of evil, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save your souls.

22Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. 23For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, 24and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so — not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer — he will be blessed in what he does.

26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not bridle his tongue, he deceives his heart and his religion is worthless. 27Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Silence may be kept after each Reading.

The Song of Simeon

Lord, you now have set your servant free *

to go in peace as you have promised;

For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, *

whom you have prepared for all the world to see:

A Light to enlighten the nations, *

and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, *

according to thy word;

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, *

which thou hast prepared before the face of all people,

To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, *

and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
