OFFICIANT

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth tremble before him.

Psalm 96:9

OFFICIANT

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

Psalm 96:9

Confession of Sin

OFFICIANT

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

OFFICIANT

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Silence may be kept.

Officiant and People together, all kneeling

ALL

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

ALL

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Remain kneeling for the concluding prayer.

OFFICIANT

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

OFFICIANT

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Gracious Light

O gracious light,

pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,

O Son of God, O Giver of Life,

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

O gracious Light,

Psalm 105:23-45

Psalm 105

23

Israel came into Egypt, *

and Jacob became a sojourner in the land of Ham.

24

The LORD made his people exceedingly fruitful; *

he made them stronger than their enemies;

25

Whose heart he turned, so that they hated his people, *

and dealt unjustly with his servants.

26

He sent Moses his servant, *

and Aaron whom he had chosen.

27

They worked his signs among them, *

and portents in the land of Ham.

28

He sent darkness, and it grew dark; *

but the Egyptians rebelled against his words.

29

He turned their waters into blood *

and caused their fish to die.

30

Their land was overrun by frogs, *

in the very chambers of their kings.

31

He spoke, and there came swarms of insects *

and gnats within all their borders.

32

He gave them hailstones instead of rain, *

and flames of fire throughout their land.

33

He blasted their vines and their fig trees *

and shattered every tree in their country.

34

He spoke, and the locust came, *

and young locusts without number,

35

Which ate up all the green plants in their land *

and devoured the fruit of their soil.

36

He struck down the firstborn of their land, *

the firstfruits of all their strength.

37

He led out his people with silver and gold; *

in all their tribes there was not one that stumbled.

38

Egypt was glad of their going, *

because they were afraid of them.

39

He spread out a cloud for a covering *

and a fire to give light in the night season.

40

They asked, and quails appeared, *

and he satisfied them with bread from heaven.

41

He opened the rock, and water flowed, *

so the river ran in the dry places.

42

For God remembered his holy word *

and Abraham his servant.

43

So he led forth his people with gladness, *

his chosen with shouts of joy.

44

He gave his people the lands of the nations, *

and they took the fruit of others' toil,

45

That they might keep his statutes *

and observe his laws.

Hallelujah!

ALL

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

The First Lesson

1And Gorgias took five thousand footmen, and a thousand chosen horse, and the army removed by night, 2that it might fall upon the army of the Jews and strike them suddenly: and the men of the citadel were his guides. 3And Judas heard thereof, and removed, he and the valiant men, that he might strike the king’s army which was at Emmaus, 4while as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp. 5And Gorgias came into the camp of Judas by night, and found no man; and he sought them in the mountains; for he said, These men flee from us. 6And as soon as it was day, Judas appeared in the plain with three thousand men: howbeit they had not armor nor swords to their minds.

7And they saw the camp of the Gentiles strong

and

fortified, and horsemen compassing it round about; and these were expert in war.

8And Judas said to the men that were with him, Fear you⌃ not their multitude, neither be you⌃ afraid of their onset. 9Remember how our fathers were saved in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army. 10And now let us cry to heaven, if he will have us, and will remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this army before our face today: 11and all the Gentiles shall know that there is one who redeemeth and saves Israel. 12And the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming near them: 13and they went out of the camp to battle. And those who were with Judas sounded their trumpets, 14and joined battle, and the Gentiles were discomfited, and fled into the plain.

15But all the hindmost fell by the sword: and they pursued them to

Gazara, and to the plains of Idumaea and Azotus and Jamnia, and there fell of them about three thousand men.

16And Judas and his army returned from pursuing after them, 17and he said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoils, inasmuch as there is a battle before us; 18and Gorgias and his army are near to us in the mountain. But stand you⌃ now against our enemies, and fight against them, and afterwards take the spoils with boldness. 19While Judas was yet making an end of these words, there appeared a part of them looking out from the mountain: 20and they saw that their army had been put to flight, and that the Jews were burning the camp; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done. 21But when they perceived these things, they were sore afraid; and perceiving also the army of Judas in the plain ready for battle,

22they fled all of them into the land of the

Philistines.

23And Judas returned to plunder the camp, and they got much gold, and silver, and blue, and sea purple, and great riches.

24And they returned home, and sang a song of thanksgiving, and gave praise

to heaven; because

his mercy

is good, because his mercy endures forever.

25And Israel had a great deliverance that day.

Silence may be kept after each Reading.

The Third Song of Isaiah

The Song of Mary

Arise, shine, for your light has come, *

and the glory of the Lord has dawned upon you.

For behold, darkness covers the land; *

deep gloom enshrouds the peoples.

But over you the Lord will rise, *

and his glory will appear upon you.

Nations will stream to your light, *

and kings to the brightness of your dawning.

Your gates will always be open; *

by day or night they will never be shut.

They will call you, The City of the Lord, *

The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

Violence will no more be heard in your land, *

ruin or destruction within your borders.

You will call your walls, Salvation, *

and all your portals, Praise.

The sun will no more be your light by day; *

by night you will not need the brightness of the moon.

The Lord will be your everlasting light, *

and your God will be your glory.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

My soul doth magnify the Lord, *

and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

For he hath regarded *

the lowliness of his handmaiden.

For behold from henceforth *

all generations shall call me blessed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me, *

and holy is his Name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him *

throughout all generations.

He hath showed strength with his arm; *

he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat, *

and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things, *

and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, *

as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Second Lesson

13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.” 14You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

15Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.” 16As it is, you boast in your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil. 17Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.

1Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you. 2Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire.

You have hoarded treasure in the last days. 4Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.

5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and murdered the righteous, who did not resist you.

Silence may be kept after each Reading.

The Song of Mary

The Song of Simeon

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: *

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him *

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm, *

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, *

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, *

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, *

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

The promise he made to our fathers, *

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, *

according to thy word;

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, *

which thou hast prepared before the face of all people,

To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, *

and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
